Asbestos removal contractors

The owner of an industrial property has been fined for exposing untrained workers to potentially deadly asbestos fibres.

Two workers had been hired to remove rubbish and debris including asbestos insulation board (AIB) from a site in Newport.

The owner of the property did not hold a licence for asbestos removal as well as failing to ensure the safety of those employed.

He was also found guilty of failing to appoint competent asbestos removal contractors to plan and manage the clean up work and no proper assessment of the risk was conducted.

No one involved in the management of the project had the skills or training to co-ordinate health and safety issues including asbestos exposure.

An HSE inspector said after the hearing:

“Inhaling asbestos fibres can cause cancer, and around 4000 people die every year from asbestos-related diseases. Those at work must ensure the risk of breathing in the fibres is therefore properly controlled.

“Any work that involves asbestos must be planned and managed by competent personnel with the right training and experience”
