Asbestos Garage Removal FAQs
How can I be sure if my garage contains asbestos?
If your garage was built or the roof was added after 1999 then it is unlikely that it will contain asbestos, as this is when it became illegal to use asbestos as a building material in the UK. However, if it was constructed any time before 1999 then there is a chance it will be made using asbestos. It is impossible to tell just by looking at a roof to know whether it contains asbestos, as the material is generally ‘hidden’ in the cement.
The only way to know for sure is to call in asbestos experts who will be able to analyse the material and establish whether asbestos is present.
If I have asbestos, do I need to get it removed as soon as possible?
If you’ve either already had a test or you know for certain that the garage roof contains asbestos, you may be tempted to have the offending material removed as soon as possible. However, if the asbestos is in good condition there is usually no need to remove it. It’s usually a better idea to leave the material alone unless it needs to have work carried out. Any time that asbestos has to be disturbed, fibres will be released, and this is when the material is dangerous.
Is my garage safe?
Even if your garage contains asbestos, it will usually be safe as long as the material is in good condition. If you have concerns about the state of repair of the garage it can be a good idea to call in specialists.
Can I just remove the roof or does the whole garage need removing?
If the roof of the garage is the only part that contains asbestos, it may be the case that the roof can be removed rather than having to have the whole garage demolished. It is best to talk with an asbestos specialist on the issue.
