Ceiling asbestos removal and disposal
Asbestos ceilings are a relatively common feature in older buildings. Whilst it has been banned from use in the UK since 1999, the material had previously been used as an insulator, as well as having excellent fireproofing and acoustic quality, which means it is quite often found in walls and ceilings. Removing asbestos ceilings or ceiling tiles containing the material is one of our most common tasks, meaning we have years of experience in doing it properly.
Our ceiling and ceiling panel removal is carried out under strict conditions to ensure that the surrounding environment does not pose a threat. This includes conducting risk assessments, air monitoring, providing safety signage and using the correct equipment.
We remove the asbestos-containing materials as quickly and efficiently as possible while minimising the risk of asbestos exposure. On completion, we bring in an independent UKAS-accredited air monitoring company to test the atmosphere for levels of asbestos fibres.
Is it safe to live in a property with asbestos ceilings or ceiling tiles?
This depends on a number of factors. Firstly, it should be noted that if the asbestos is undamaged and in good condition then it is unlikely to pose a threat to health. It is only when asbestos is disturbed that it is dangerous.
However, if an asbestos ceiling or ceiling tiles are no longer in good condition then they can be at risk of getting damaged and releasing fibres into the air. If you are worried about the asbestos in your ceiling, it is always best to speak to asbestos specialists.
Does my ceiling definitely contain asbestos?
Many individuals assume that their ceiling contains asbestos – perhaps because it looks similar to panels or tiles that you believe have asbestos in them. However, it should be noted that many products that look similar to asbestos are not dangerous. Unfortunately, it also works in reverse; many ceilings that look completely normal may contain asbestos.
The only way to be sure is to have an asbestos survey carried out. Our asbestos surveys will establish whether asbestos is present – we can then advise you on the next steps.
Can I remove asbestos ceiling tiles myself?
Removing asbestos yourself is never recommended, unless you have the relevant training and experience in carrying it out properly. Many property owners believe that if they find asbestos, the safest solution is to simply remove it from the vicinity as soon as possible – however, this is a mistake.
If the removal process is handled incorrectly it can release large quantities of asbestos fibres into the atmosphere, where they can be breathed into the lungs.
